Air conditioning

Compare air conditioning quotes

Modern reverse-cycle air conditioners heat and cool far more efficiently than old resistive heaters. Getting the type and size right for your home matters more than the brand on the front.

Split system indoor unit

Good for a single room or open-plan area. Sizing (kW) should come from a heat-load assessment — room size, insulation, windows and orientation.

Outdoor unit and pipe run

Placement affects noise and efficiency. Long pipe runs and double-storey installs cost more — check they're priced on the quote.

Energy rating label

Check the Zoned Energy Rating Label for your climate zone, not just the star count.

Ducted and zoning

Ducted systems condition the whole home through ceiling vents and let you zone rooms on and off — but they need roof or underfloor space.

Controls

Zoning, timers and app control help you only heat or cool the rooms you're using.

Split, multi-head or ducted?

TypeGood forTrade-offs
Split systemOne room or open-plan areaLowest cost; one unit per space
Multi-head split2–5 rooms with one outdoor unitSaves outdoor space; less efficient than separate splits in some setups
DuctedWhole-home comfort with zoningHighest upfront cost; needs roof or underfloor space

Getting the size right

An undersized unit runs flat out and struggles on extreme days; an oversized one cycles on and off and costs more upfront. A proper quote should be based on a heat-load assessment that considers room size, ceiling height, insulation, windows, orientation and your climate.

Reading efficiency labels

Look for the Zoned Energy Rating Label, which shows heating and cooling efficiency for hot, average and cold climate zones. Compare the rating for your zone, not just the star count.

How to compare air conditioning quotes

  • The installer's licence and any required accreditation, with numbers you can check.
  • An itemised quote: exact brands and model numbers, quantities and what's included.

  • Who handles network/connection approvals and compliance certificates.
  • Deposit amount, payment schedule and what happens if the job is delayed.
  • Refrigerant handling licence (ARCtick) and electrical licence for the installers.
  • Indoor and outdoor unit locations, pipe run lengths and any extra charges for long runs or double storeys.

Frequently asked questions

Is reverse-cycle cheaper to run than gas heating?

In many homes, yes — especially with solar. It depends on your tariffs, the system's efficiency and your climate.

How long does a split system install take?

A simple back-to-back install often takes a few hours. Longer pipe runs, double-storey installs or electrical upgrades take longer.
