Federal: Cheaper Home Batteries Program
The federal program provides a discount on eligible home batteries installed with new or existing solar, delivered through small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Installers usually claim the certificates and take their value off your price.
- Tiered from 1 May 2026: 100% of the certificate factor for the first 14 kWh of usable capacity, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh, and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh.
- Installation date decides: the rules in force on the day of installation apply, not the date you sign.
- Installer and product: the battery and installation must meet the program's requirements — ask your installer to confirm in writing.

Tips for getting the incentive right
- Ask for the number of certificates and their dollar value as separate lines on the quote.
- Get the installation date in writing if timing affects your discount.
- Don't let a deadline rush you into an oversized battery.
- Check whether a VPP is required for any state incentive, and read its terms.
